Life  Sketch of Advocate Promode Mankin M.P,

State Minister for Ministry of Cultural Affairs

 

 

Advocate Promode Mankin was born in a respectable Garo family at Ramnagar village in Bakaljora Union under Durgapur Upazila in Netrokona District on April 18 in 1939. His father was late Megha Tozu and mother Hridoy Cecelia Mankin. He is the fifth among his eight brothers and sisters.

 

Promode Mankin acquired Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree from Dhaka Notre Dame College in 1963. He obtained Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) degree from Mymensingh Teachers Training College in 1968 and LLB from Mymensingh Law College in 1982. He is a Member of Mymensingh District Bar Association.

 

He was involved in politics from his student hood and working life. He was directly engaged in politics through joining Bangladesh Awami League in 1991. He is now the President of  Haluaghat Upazila Awami League as well as a Member of Mymensingh District Awami League.

 

A representative of Garo and Christian community, Promode Mankin was the founder convener of national-based social organization Tribal Welfare Association. He is now performing responsibilities of the central President of the organization.

 

At the beginning of his career, Promode Mankin was as a school Teacher and later he involved himself in law profession as well as NGO activities. He performed his duty as the Regional Director of Mymensingh Region of Caritas Bangladesh from 1987 to 1990. He was also the former Vice-President of Coordinating council on Human Rights in Bangladesh (CCHRB), the Cooperative Credit Union League of Bangladesh (CCULB) and a Director of Bangladesh Samabaya Bank (Govt.).

 

Currently he is one of the Vice-Presidents of Bangladesh-India Friendship Society as well as All Party Parliamentary Group(APPG), Member of Southeast Asian Human Rights Commission and Ghatak

Dalal Nirmul Committee. Besides, he is the elected President of Bangladesh Christian Association and the founder of Gobrakura Land Port as well as founder President of the Importers-Exporters Association.

 

Prormode Mankin is a life Member of Haluaghat Public Library and Chief Adviser of Haluaghat Press Club. He is also the founder of Bhasha Shaheed Abdul Jabbar Smriti High School as well as Haluaghat Technical and Business Management College.

 

He played an important role in the Liberation War in 1971 as an organizer. During the Liberation War, he performed his responsibilities with utmost sincerity to look after 50,000 Refugees at Shibbari Refugee Camp in Meghalaya in India.

 

Promode Mankin visited the United States twice as an entourage Member of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in1996-2001 term . Besides, he visited many countries, including the UK, France, Australia, Italy, Canada, Greece, the Philippines, South Korea, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Dubai and Vatican City.

 

He is married to Momota Areng, on January 29 in 1964. The eldest daughter of late Joakim Ashakra, an eminent Garo leader and former Union parished chairman under Durgapur Upazila in Netrokona District. He is the father of five daughters and a son.

 

Promode Mankin was elected Parliament Member from Mymensingh-1 Constituency (Haluaghat-Dhobaura Upazila) in the Ninth Jatiya Sangsad elections held on December 29 in 2008 on Awami League ticket. Earlier, he was also elected Parliament Member in 1991 and 2001 from same Party.

 

The lone elected Parliament Member from Garo and  as well as from the Christian community of the country, Promode Mankin was appointed State Minister for Ministry of Cultural Affairs on July 31 in 2009.
